April 17, 2008 - I was craving boneless wings today but it never ended up happening. But I do have a lot of stuff to write about from the gig I played this evening. D'Visitors played at Push Ultra Lounge in downtown St Pete. I have never been here but I've heard from several people that it is an upscale, "Miami" type bar. When I got there at 7 PM, people were dining outside and everyone looked pretty well to do. The bar on the second floor was pretty fresh looking, with a nice sized stage and good sound equipment. The room had a weird 'art' installation, making it seem like you were inside the belly of a whale, due to the use of custom cut wood shaped like a whale skeleton. The place is just ridiculous. Supposedly on the weekends the bar is completely jammed with people buying $250 bottles of Gray Goose vodka so that they can sit in cordoned off areas on white 'couches' (white cushions on a wood platform). The false exclusivity is just not necessary for my taste. Why would I want to go to a bar and spend (splitting with a friend or 3) $250 on a bottle of alcohol, plus probably a $10 cover, plus be jammed in listening to loud repetitive music? I would rather be at a dive bar playing darts and drinking $3 beers, and know that if I want to buy someone a drink, it's not going to break the bank. Of course, the people who are paying $250 at Push are either well enough off that $250 is money they could blow their nose on, or it is someone with so much debt and distorted superficial values...
