May 23, 2005 - I met another sax player in town tonite at the blues jam at the Green Iguana on West Shore. I showed up pretty much when the band was starting to play, as per usual, and made my presence known so that Dean would call me up on stage. I got called up in the first set and the crowd enjoyed it. I was bummed about not getting called up in the second set at all. The new sax guy showed up in the middle of the second set. He kept going on and on about all these saxes he owns and his custom neck that he just got for his tenor and all kinds of stuff. I was able to hang with the conversation since I know a lot about instruments, but it just didn't interest me. What matters more than talking about instruments is if you know how to play it. He and I got called to the stage at the same time as 'the horn section' and we didn't really get any chance to play a solo for a long time. They just wanted us to play some chords and hits underneath. This guy didn't want anything to do with that and frankly didn't seem very capable of playing anything in unison with me. We both pretty much played our own thing in the background while other guys took solos. Eventually Shawn Brown showed up and took over the organ in the middle of a song. He immediately became the center of attention (much deservedly, he is the most bad-ass organ player I've ever seen). That meant even less chance for soloing. Well, finally when Shawn pointed to the two of us for a solo, I jumped on the mic. I could tell the other guy was pissed when after my solo they went to a guitar and then finished the song, not letting him solo. Oh well, he doesn't understand how to play the game, I guess.
