March 16, 2004 - The morning at work today was full of moving my stuff from 'the super cube (TM)' to a new smaller cube. On the surface, I was told that I was getting a similar sized cube, but it was very clear to me that this was a downgrade in cube size and a move further away from the business team I am in. The claim is that they need the area I was in to house all the inventory planners, so I shouldn't be offended or insulted, but the fact is that now I am further away from the team, in a smaller cube, and more out in the open, while a open office sits across the hall from me. The move was done by lunch time. I got in some basketball at lunch time, first by myself, then with Anwar in a one-on-one game. He had a very big height advantage, leaving me to use my hook shot only, which did not work out at all. I had numerous visitors to my new cube in the afternoon. This all lead up to 5:30 PM when I left to go over to NKU for some recreation. I ran a mile in 8:26, then ran a few more laps before stopping. This rest was not for long, as Carl Wetterhan met me for some racquetball. I played well in the first game, but he managed 8 straight points to start off the second game. I ended up winning both games, though. Mike Morgan met me at my house with a big truck. We loaded up my chest of drawers and washing machine into the truck and then drove it over to my new apartment, where both things got put into place. I make it sound a lot easier than it really was. I said to Mike, "I ran a mile and played racquetball today, and this is the most exercise I've gotten so far today" to describe just how hard it was moving those two things. I bought Mike some Wendy's after we picked up his girlfriend Tara B on the way down to the Blue Wisp. Subbing in for Phil DeGreg was Jim Connerly. The crowd was VERY thin today. I was disappointed with the turn-out, since a lot of the experience in listening to jazz is the ambience. There is not a lot of ambience to go around in a near-empty room. I requested a song from Jim which I hadn't heard in about 4 years. the request was highly pressured from Tara and Mike, who just wanted to see me get up and talk to Jim. I requested "Spiritual". The one and only time I heard it at the old Blue Wisp was a very memorable night. I was sitting in the front with many Accidentals friends. The music was going into the middle of the second set and the room was completely filled. Whatever space wasn't taken up by a person was taken up by cigarette smoke. Conversation
battled with the music from the trio. Suddenly, everyone in the place listened in closer as Phil started with a huge candenza with major Gospel feel. The fever built through the song. At one point, people were cheering loudly for the song. It was an amazing night. That energy was totally missing tonite, which is why I didn't do the song justice by requesting it. Jim was impressed I remembered the song, and played it for me, in a medly with another song, and then it was about time to leave. I drove Mike and Tara up to my place since that is where Mike's big truck was, and I went in to bed as they left.
