January 31, 2004 - My intention was to wake up, meet up with Brock, and then tour around San Diego. I woke up pretty early (7:30 AM) and Brock wasn't going to be here until 11 AM, so I drove around, found some of the best donuts I've ever eaten in my life, and then headed downtown. I ended up at some harbor area where large military ships were on display. The air was cool so I didn't stay outside very long. I went back to the hotel and waited for Brock to show up. He didn't show up at 11 AM. I waited until 11:45, then left a message with LeAnne for him that I would be back at 3 PM. I couldn't wait around all day, since I had so much to see, and he was already 45 minutes late. I drove to LaJolla and walked along the beach. I came upon this place where seals beach themselves to sun in the early afternoon. The scene was pretty spectacular. It is amazing that seals return to this same place every day. I then got back in my car and drove to find lunch. I stopped along the highway and got pizza (I was looking for tacos but didn't see any Mexican places that appealed to me). I drove down to Mission Beach Point Park and ate my pizza while watching sailboats go through the inlet. Then I walked around the park a little. It was about 1:30 or 2 PM when I got back in my car, and I figured I had enough time to check out one more thing before heading back to my hotel. I drove down to Cabrillo Point National Park. The cost to get in was $4 per car, so $4 for me. I got into the park around 2:25, so I just had a few minutes to spare before leaving. The view from here is very dramatic. The park overlooks a body of water dividing the place I was at from downtown San Diego, with military bases in between, occupying large amounts of land and some of the water. I took a few photos and got back in my car at exactly 2:38 PM. This was later than I hoped, but I had to work around it. I drove to the hotel and intended to meet Brock there. Unfortunately he wasn't in sight. There was a note on the door from him to call him on his cell, so at least he had found the hotel and stopped in to find me. I called him and apologized for not waiting around. We talked for a few minutes, and then he asked where I was. I told him that I was in the hotel room, and he realized that he didn't notice me walk into my room. He was in his car, on the other side of the parking lot, and I didn't notice him! It was funny, you had to be there. Brock and I got in my car and drove to Balboa Park. The park was very nice with many well decorated buildings. We walked through the photography museum. Following this, we headed into town to find dinner. We ended up at an Italian restaurant. My food wasn't particularly spectacular but he really liked what he got. Then I told him about this place I read about called Incredible Desserts. This place was everything its name billed it to be. I had something with coconut shavings and bananas foster which was pretty amazing. It was late and I was tired from a long day so we headed back to my hotel to rest up for some fun tomorrow. On the way to the hotel we stopped and took photos of the city under the night sky.
