February 1, 2004 - I woke up in sunny San Diego. It was about 8 AM when I got up and showered. Brock Fortman came down from Los Angeles last night and hung out with me, and took the bed next to mine in my room. We checked out of the hotel and drove over to LaJolla. On the way we stopped at a few places and took some photos. Then we ended up over by the seals laying on the beach. Brock got coffee and quiche at some coffee shop. I had an omelet at some other place. Then we got back in the car and drove along the coast. There were so many cool places that we stopped at. The Pacific Ocean has so much more character than the Atlantic Ocean. I am speaking specifically of the interaction between land and sea. The Atlantic meanders up to the East Coast very gently, in a manner that would be otherwise un-noticed, were it next to the West Coast. The West Coast rams right into the ocean, with great cliffs and rocks keeping watch over the Pacific. Surfers were in large quantities as the 10 foot waves came in droves from the distant sea. Brock and I climbed up and down these cliffs and walked along the beach collecting rocks and photos. We ended up down at Cabrillo Point National Park. I got to investigate the lighthouse and take in the view of San Diego downtown one more time. We then went down to another part of town, Coronado. This is a very exclusive island with a world famous hotel, Hotel Del Coronado. Brock and I walked through some of the hotel, then had ice cream at their store, and then got back in the car to catch the West Coast sunset. We ended up over at Mission Beach, walking down the boardwalk. Boardwalk doesn't mean exactly what it used to. The boardwalk is actually cement, and wide enough for people to walk and bikers to bike in either direction. We walked to a pier in the distance. Once at our destination, I found a good spot and started getting prepped to take a sunset photo. I was messing around with my camera and took some before the sun officially set. This was good because as it turned out, my actual sunset photos were lame due to a boring sunset, but one that I took when the sun was right behind the pier turned out to be pretty cool. The sun made the pier glow, and a bird was in the distance flying away. We walked over a block to the strip and found an Uno's Pizza to eat at and watch the end of the Super Bowl. It was dark when we were done eating and Brock needed to return to LA. I drove him back to the hotel where his car was sitting, and then found my rental car place (it wasn't at the airport, or even within a mile, but actually on Pacific Highway). I took the shuttle back to the airport and waited for my flight to leave at 11 PM. I couldn't go to sleep since I would most likely miss my flight by sleeping through the announcements, so I bought a magazine to read. My flight left a little late, but it wasn't too much of a hold-up.
