March 8, 2003 - The bright light of a warm day rising in the morning caused me to wake up at 10 AM. This meant I only got about 8 hours of sleep. How can a man live on 8 hours of sleep a night on the weekends? The real agenda item here was that Chris and Kavia wanted to go to the Coffee Cup for breakfast. I brushed my teeth and made sure my hair wasn't totally horrible and then we drove to pick up Jake over at his apartment. For breakfast it was Kavia, Chris, Vanessa, Jake, Neil (Kavia's brother), a friend of Chris's, some random Asian girl and her boyfriend, and me. All of us except one got the Big John breakfast which includes 2 pancakes, sausage, bacon, or ham, potatoes, toast or a biscuit, and eggs. Quite a deal for $5.99! It reminds me of the Farmers Breakfast at Bob Evans. Jake said during breakfast that he could get us all into the Ridges at Ohio University. The Ridges is a building complex that was used as an insane asylum from the early 1800's up until 1985. It has a lot of historical folklore associated with it and for this reason people are fascinated with it. On top of its creepy stories it is a majestic building complex. The inside of the building was not very creepy. A lot of it has been rehabbed so that it can be used by the OU art department. The rooms are fairly small because they used to be the living quarters for insane people. I think maybe it was the small rooms that kept them insane. Venturing to another part of the building left a different impression on the group as we toured around. Pipes were clanging violently, a bird was flying into a window trying to escape, ceiling pipes were exposed, temperatures varied by 10 to 20 degrees from one room to another, and there were remnants left over from the days when the building was used for an asylum. We took harbor on the rooftop terrace where a great view was to be had of the schools football and basketball stadiums. At this point the weather was incredible. I convinced everyone that we should play some disc golf. The group split into the ladies plus Neil and then the rest of the guys. The girls went into town for ice cream and we trekked over to campus to play disc golf. The ground was soggy and we all hadn't played in a while so it wasn't a great showing, but it was certainly nice to be out in the sun doing something rather than sitting on a porch drinking beer. Speaking of which, after disc golf we ended up back at Chris's watching movies on TBS and drinking some of the beer that was left in the keg from the previous night. Around 5:30 it was decided we should get some food from Bob's IGA and grill out on the back deck. We ended up with burgers and fries, the perfect combination. Everything turned out great. Unfortunately Kavia decided that it would be a great time to play quarters. I hate playing quarters with Kavia because she plays on a professional drinking game circuit, or at least it appears that way. After about 20 rounds of quarters I sat down and chatted with Vanessa. Vanessa was looking pretty tired. Little did I know that when we all went out to the bars that she would become a drinking machine. At the first bar (The Pigskin) she quickly did in two Black Widows. Then Jake and I departed to the Union to see some rocking bands. The bands were a lot heavier on the guitar and loudness than I was expecting. The last band was pretty entertaining but I am not a fan of that musical style. Jake and I went our separate ways. Rain was falling in a fairly stable drizzle. I hate walking in the rain. After a 10 minute walk I ended up at Chris's house. Vanessa apparently had a lot more to drink during the night while they were at the bars and it was fairly amusing. I gave her back her phone which she had lent to me and told her that she should do some drunk dialing. She thought that was a great idea and called her friend Amy. Keep in mind that it is about 2 am. Amy didn't pick up the phone so she left a nice message telling her all about what she had to drink that night. It was quite a bit. In fact I was worried that Vanessa would get sick during the night. I fell asleep with wet clothes on from the walk home in the rain.
